Biography

Jan Karremans is Senior Sales Engineer for the DACH region as well as Director of Sales Engineering in EMEA, overseeing a team of engineers providing in-depth insights and consultancy on the deployment and management of EDB Postgres databases. With over 20 years experience in the database market and a former qualified Oracle ACE, Jan is a well respected expert in relational database technologies, speaking regularly at Oracle User Group events around the world and at Postgres User Group events across Europe. He began his career working as a systems administrator running a Datapoint Mainframe at a medical facility for the Royal Dutch Army. While there Jan supported the switch to Oracle Database 7.1 on a Micro VAX 3100, which began his involvement with the Oracle Database. Subsequently, he participated in the development and deployment of a database platform for healthcare administration, called Ecaris, which was developed on a Rapid Webapplication Development framework, similar to Oracle APEX. On a parallel track in his career, Jan moved into sales and consultancy as Business Development Manager for New Zealand based and operated Dbvisit. At the company he developed sales campaigns to drive demand for its innovative software that protects data in Oracle Standard Edition databases. Prior to joining EnterpriseDB Jan was director of operations for Portrix, where he was responsible for all IT operations and specifically for running Portrix GPM software. In his scarce free time Jan enjoys traveling the country-side with his charming wife, preferably in a good size RV or ride his bright red Honda VF700C Super Magna into the sunset. Riding the second wave, Open Source for relational databases

Event: Virtual Connect 2020, Virtual Connect 2020-Cloud
Stream: Emerging Technologies

Open Source software solutions are nothing new. Free – as in freedom – software was introduced nearly immediately after software and hardware got separated, in the ’50 of the last century. We see a surge in the adoption of Open Source, especially as more complex systems get introduced as open solutions. This presentation discusses the various “waves” we can observe in Open Source solutions and how they actually interact. Many of today’s disruptive developments are powered by Open Source solutions and by being fully aware of this, we can harness its power. How do databases fit in this equation? How do relational databases fit in this equation specifically? What does the database landscape look like, and where does Open Source fit in? Interesting questions in today’s world, from all angles, such as business, operations, development. Join this talk and get more insight into the wonderful world of data storage, data processing and information delivery!

Comparing Postgres to Oracle

Event: Virtual Connect 2020, Virtual Connect 2020-Cloud
Stream: Emerging Technologies

There is a lot of disruption going on at present time. These changes range from "the adoption to big data", through “migration to the cloud” and focus shifts within businesses. Creating opportunities to explore and adopt all these changes are important. Renewal of legacy systems and opportunities to build new applications, are important but can be very expensive. Using a smart alternative data platform can help you out. In this session you will see the possibilities of PostgreSQL in the EnterpriseDB Postgres Server edition. You will be able to asses if this platform is the right alternative for you to disrupt your operation and open doors to new success.
